A Makerspace is a place for students to make all kinds of things in support of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM). STEAM focused education and Makerspaces as an extension of that, help students to improve problem solving, engage in higher order thinking, and fosters collaboration and creativity. Students will be able to make all kinds of things, from origami, bracelets, structures using blocks and legos to programs. Our first few sessions of the Maker Club have already begun and students are making up a storm! Additionally, we’re pleased to announce that the MCPE and PTO have graciously awarded the library with grants to expand the Makerspace and include legos, robots like Spheros, a green screen and much more. Students can’t wait to explore all of these great tools when they arrive!
Global Read Aloud
Students in second grade will join people all over the world in reading books by the same author in the Global Read Aloud program. The author study this year is Amy Krouse Rosenthal who has written books such as Chopsticks, It’s Not Fair, The OK Book, and many other fabulous titles. To learn more about Amy Krouse Rosenthal and the Global Read Aloud, see the library's Global Read Aloud page. Take a peek at the map of those participating so far:
Researching
Meanwhile, in third grade, students will be busy learning research skills, such as finding books on the library catalog, using an online encyclopedia, and searching on a kid safe search engine. They will be able to apply these skills in an upcoming classroom research project. Library Clubs
We will be starting our Library Clubs very soon. To see all of the latest news on clubs, be sure to look on the Library website under Library Programs. Tech Club We’ll use Computers and iPads to learn new technology. Reading Rocks Club Students may either read independently or join a group read aloud. Express It Club We’ll create things just for fun such as Drawing, Coloring, Zentangle, and more. Story Club (3rd grade) Students will learn strategies for writing stories, develop them, and then learn different ways to share their stories (using the ipad and computer). Newspaper Club (3rd grade) Our student reporters learn about the different types of newspaper stories, and write about the latest Wheelock news. Book Club A reading enrichment club where students have different tasks and dive into an in-depth discussion on an appropriately challenging book. Volunteering Also, parent volunteers are a huge help to the library program and any level of assistance is greatly appreciated. Sign up for volunteering will be available through Signup Genius. Information about tasks and links to individual class signups is posted on the library website, or click here on Volunteers if interested. Welcome and welcome back to all Wheelock students! We look forward to a wonderful year with many exciting lessons, including online safety, as well as several programs such as Book Cafe where students bring their lunch to the library and listen to stories, Book Clubs, Newspaper Club and much more! Be sure to check out the library's website to see the latest library news, from programs to library research projects. You can even look up library books from home! Also, the library is very grateful for the many parent volunteers who help us out! Those interested in volunteering, more information will be available in the next month on our website. |
