Clubs
Reading Rocks Club Students may either read independently, read with a friend or join a group read aloud. Maker Club In the Maker Club, we make things, either by hand like legos, or digitally, like coding on the iPads and computers. Express It Club The Express It Club focuses on expressing ourselves in different ways, such as drawing, paper folding, and more. Comic Club We’ll be making comics in all different formats: paper and then digitally using different sites and apps. Book Club A reading enrichment club where students have different tasks and dive into an in-depth discussion on an appropriately challenging book. Clubs are optional and students are able to sign up in library class. Most clubs occur 1 day a week during recess. Each trimester, club membership rotates to a new group of students. Every effort is made to offer an opportunity for all interested students to participate. However, due to the high interest in some clubs, it may not be possible to offer membership to every student. |

Global Read Aloud Day (2nd grade) Global Read Aloud Day is a day where people all across the world celebrate reading. They connect by all reading the same author. Hour of Code The Hour of Code is a celebration of computer programming that happens in December. Students spend 1 hour writing their own code. Read Across America Every year, reading is celebrated in a nationwide effort called Read Across America. Using the father of Beginning Books, Dr. Seuss' birthday on March 2nd as the date, children all across the country participate in some great reading activities. Read Across America Readathon (3rd grade) Aims to boost children’s literacy skills by encouraging students to read widely for pleasure. Minutes of reading count as miles in our cross country class challenge and prizes are given to the top classes. But everyone wins when they read! Wheelock Reads Week The Wheelock School Community celebrates Books, Reading and Authors for a whole week full of activities. Poetry Slam Students create their own poems using Google Slides. As a celebration, we'll end with our very own library class Poetry Slam where our poets share their work. |
