Miles for Water
Our theme for the Third Grade Extra Library Class this trimester has been Change and Changemakers. We've learned all about everyday people who have made a difference in big and small ways. During one class with Mrs. Callahan's and Ms. Hevey's students we read the story The Water Princess by Susan Verde. It's based on model Georgie Badiel's experience growing up in Burkina Faso, Africa. Reading and discussing this story led our students to becoming changemakers all on their own.
This is 100% student driven
The Water Princess Story:
In The Water Princess, we meet Gie Gie, a young girl who imagines the beautiful sky and land as her kingdom. Yet she can't command the water supply to come closer to her village, or make it clean. So she starts her day (like every other), getting up early and walking for miles in the baking sun to collect water. Then she has to return home, carrying a heavy pot of water on her head those same miles. And she's still not done, because her family has to boil the water before they can drink it. Despite knowing she has to make this day long journey every day, she dreams of a time when her village will have its own clean water. |
