5th-graders prepare for big move to middle schoolBy Leila Warner and Sadie Wyatt
The time has come. The 5th-graders are leaving Janney and moving on to middle school. This week, they will celebrate with clap-out, a promotion ceremony and a party. Every year there is a theme for the class.
This year the theme is “appreciation.” “We chose the theme because that’s what we thought would help the 5th-graders reflect most,” 5th-grade teacher Mary Osterman said.
Principal Norah Lycknell said, “I think that the theme this year is about reminding the 5th-graders about each other and their experiences at the school, both good and bad.” Fifth-graders said they like the theme. “It’s a really good message,”Madelyn Shapiro said. Max Karp agreed. “I like it because it means a lot to me,” he said. “I think that it applies to all the 5th-graders.”
The first promotion event is the Janney clap-out. Clap-out will be at 2:55 on Wednesday. Clap-out is a Janney tradition—and a nice way to end the school experience. At clap-out, all of the Janney classes come out in the hall and clap while the 5th-graders walk by them and out the front doors of the school. “I’m excited for the clap-out because I’ve been doing it for a long time, watching the other 5th-graders walking down the halls,” Madelyn said. “But now I get to be the one walking down the halls.”
The promotion ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in the gym. Parents, siblings and other family members can attend. The 5th-graders will give performances connected to the class theme of appreciation. The students can share about themselves, their memories or experiences at Janney, or thoughts about moving on. In the past, 5th-graders have shown artwork, read poetry or writing, performed skits, sung and played instruments.
