All Week (18th - 22nd)
Bookmark contest Draw your very own bookmark for Wheelock Reads week. Blank bookmarks will be sent home for you to design and then hand in to the library by Friday, May 22nd. The winning bookmark from each class will be photocopied for the rest of your class to keep. Please do not color your design in, so when copied, others can color their own. Horrible Harry Challenge Try to complete the Horrible Harry Challenge! Can you read at least 18 of Suzy Kline’s Horrible Harry books? Pick up a bookmark in the library to keep track. All who complete it will receive a Who Was bookmark and get to sign the Wheelock Window of Fame. 15 names will be selected to choose a library raffle prize. Caught in act of reading Prepare to be caught...in the act of reading at any time or place. If you’re caught reading by the library staff, your picture will be taken and posted on the library website. You’ll also receive a glow in the dark bracelet. Wheelock Wake-Up Words The best way to start the day is with wonderful words to say. Listen each morning during Wheelock Reads for a fun or inspiring poem, quote, or riddle. One Book, One School (Recommended Read) Join your classmates and teachers in reading the very same book. For Wheelock Reads Week, you’re welcome to join us in reading The Tale of Despereaux, by Kate DiCamillo Tuesday, May 19th Author Visit: Suzy Kline Author of the incredibly popular Horrible Harry books (and many others), Suzy Kline will be visiting the third grade. Wear Your Words Express yourself with words! Everyone is encouraged to wear an appropriate t-shirt with writing on it. It will be the loudest quietest Tuesday! Wednesday, May 20th Author Visit: Diane deGroat Diane deGroat has written and illustrated the Gilbert & Friends series, Annie Pitts, and many more books. She will be visiting the second grade. Friday, May 22nd Read at the Beach or Courtyard Classes are invited to come down to the library or courtyard to sit back, relax and read silently. Sessions will be 25 minutes. Book Character Dress-Up Day There are so many characters that have come alive from the many books we’ve read. Let’s make them come alive at school! On Friday, come in to school dressed as an appropriate book character and enjoy walking down the halls of Wheelock. You’ll see some of our favorite stories in a whole new way. Drop Everything and Read (2:45-3:00) Drop what you’re doing and join kids and adults around the building in celebrating reading together by...reading! |

Diane deGroat is from Belleville, New Jersey. She has always loved drawing. In first and second grade, her favorite things were to paint in draw in the classroom and she would finish spelling and math as quickly as she could so she's have time to do it. Suzy Kline was born in Berkley, CA. As a child she loved to write. She has lived and taught in many places, but finally settled in CT.
