The Readathon
We’re excited to kick off a fun Reading Challenge for the 3rd grade at Wheelock. As well as being fun, the challenge aims to boost children’s literacy skills by encouraging students to read widely for pleasure and learning, develop their imagination and cultivate a passion for literature. The Boston Readathon, our 3rd grade challenge, will start 3/10 and lead up to the Boston Marathon. For every 1 book read by each class, they will earn ¼ mile on the Boston Marathon racecourse. For example, if four students read 2 books (equaling 8 books for the class), their class will earn 2 miles on the course. A bulletin board will show each class’ progress. To supplement this challenge, both Library and Gym classes will be studying the Boston Marathon in several ways. We’ll also keep updated miles earned here. The Prize The class to finish the Boston Readathon first will win an extra gym class or library class. Let the race begin! |
Reading Log
Students also have the option of logging their books read on a great site called Biblionasium (access info on back). Each student will have their own login information and be able to review books, see recommendations from classmates, win awards, and more. It’s a safe site without blogs and even comments are preset. There will also be a paper log version, that students can use instead of the website. Paper logs can be brought to the library each morning and returned to students by the end of the day.
